our history
WHERE IT ALL
STARTED
Aloha Youth Lacrosse Association (AYLA) was founded in 2003 as a youth club league and player development program for Boys and Girls, from Elementary through High School. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport on the US mainland, with more high schools and colleges fielding teams from the West Coast/Pacific Northwest to the Midwest/Southwest and East Coast.
In Hawaii, lacrosse is small in numbers, but the youth league has grown every year and very quickly especially in the last few years. We continue to lobby the ILH-OIA for recognition as a varsity sport.
about the sport
THE GAME
OF
LACROSSE
Lacrosse requires the ability to run well and develop great hand-eye coordination. The game is derived from native North Americans, who for many centuries used the game to train for battle, or compete between tribes in place of war.
The modern game for boys involves 10 players on a team, with protective gear, passing a hard rubber ball with a Lacrosse stick to score in a goal on a field similar to a soccer field. Girls Lacrosse does not allow body contact and is played 12 on 12 with only goggles and a mouth guard. Girls Lacrosse and Boys Lacrosse are radically different and are referred to as 1 Sport, 2 Games.

ALL ABOUT
OUR
COACHES
AYLA head coaches are certified under US Lacrosse coach training programs. Most AYLA coaches are former college Lacrosse players, and many from top schools including Navy, Army, St. Johns, Rutgers, D-III power house Salisbury and Ithaca College, and other strong programs.
Their experience translates into solid development skills and values in our youth players. Many of our coaches are members of the Hawaii Men’s Lacrosse League and the Wahine League of Honolulu.

Aloha, Parents!
Lacrosse season is beginning, and I wanted to introduce myself and get you all ready for a great season. I’m Eve Meek and am the current Ford Island / Central Oahu President for AYLA. We’ve pulled together great coaches to coach your sons and daughters, and we are always looking for more volunteers to help coach, referree, or be team parents. Please don’t let limited knowledge of lacrosse stop you from volunteering. The more, the merrier. We need you, and the kids need you!
Practices start the week of 2/24/20:
- Girls’ practices with Coach Alie are on Mondays and Thursdays from 5pm – 6:30 pm
- Boys’ practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays also from 5 pm – 6:30 pm
- Coach Will is coaching the peewees
- Coach Dave is coaching the elementary team
- Coach Connor is coaching the middle schoolers
All the practices are at the NOAA fields on Ford Island. From the bridge, take your second exit off the circle, drive past the NOAA building on your right, and the big field next to the parking lot is where you’ll find the practice field, before you get to the Ford Island Landing neighborhood. You can park either in the parking lot or along the main road next to the field.
Gear rental is Saturday 2/22 from 11:00am – 12:00 pm at A-American Self Storage, 720 South Street (enter on Mission St). Please register to rent gear at alohalax.org and bring a deposit check. Contact Eric Martin at (808) 772-3554 with any questions.
Some of our teams are still pretty small, and we are always looking for more kids to join – please spread the word and help us grow our teams.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions. You can call or text me at 860-449-3859. I’ll be moving back to the mainland in a couple of months, so think about if you’d like to join the AYLA team and represent this area going forward.
Aloha!
Our practices are held on Tuesday’s & Thursday’s starting Tuesday, February 19th, 2019
5:00-6:30 at Pu’uloa District Park, next to Keoneula Elementary School/ Firestation.

Aloha Windward Lacrosse Ohana –
Welcome to the 2020 Aloha Youth Lacrosse Association (AYLA) season.
This season I’m excited to announce the addition of a Windward Boys High School team to the AYLA. This team will practice Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 PM – 6 PM at Kalaheo High School. Coach Harry Jackson will start practices next Monday the 24th.
The remainder of the Windward Lacrosse Ohana, boys and girls teams, will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 PM – 6 PM at Aikahi Elementary School. Practices will begin next Thursday, the 27th.
This year we’ll have a 10-week schedule beginning with two scrimmages on Sunday March 15th and Sunday the 22nd. Eight regular season games will begin on Sunday March 29th. The final games will be on Sunday May 17th. All games will take place on Sundays in Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. Two exceptions – we will not have games on Easter (4/12) or Mother’s Day (5/10). During those two weeks well play our games on Saturdays, 4/11 and 5/9. The complete schedule will be posted on our website very soon.
We still have roster space available on most, if not all, of our teams. I encourage you and your kids to recruit friends to join us this season. Also, it takes a village to run a successful team and league. Please reach out to me or your child’s coach if you’re willing to assist with the season in any capacity.
I look forward to a great season. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at all or ideas to make our league and teams stronger (careful, when I did this last season they signed me up as AYLA VP…).
Thanks,
Mike
Aloha!
If you are in grades 9-12, it’s not too late to come out and see what lacrosse is all about! No experience needed, just a good attitude and willing to try. Practices generally start in February and may vary based on teams.
